Your trash bill increased. Compare these six numbers first.
A higher total can come from changed service, a base-rate increase, new recurring fees, or one-off events. Separate them before contacting the provider.

1. Confirm the service did not change
Compare container size, pickup frequency, waste stream, location, and any extra pickups. If service changed, record the effective date so it is not mistaken for unexplained price drift.
2. Compare the base service charge
Use the earliest and latest bill for the same service. The base charge is the cleanest starting point because percentage escalators and negotiated rates often appear there.
3. Separate fuel and environmental fees
Record each recurring fee independently. A changing fee may have a different contractual basis than the base service rate, so combining them hides which component actually moved.
4. Isolate admin, overage, and contamination charges
Administrative charges may recur while overage or contamination charges may be event-based. Check several periods before treating a one-time item as a new monthly run rate.
5. Convert the monthly difference into an annual number
Subtract the earliest comparable total from the latest and multiply a recurring monthly increase by twelve. That number is not guaranteed savings; it is the cost of leaving the current run rate unexamined for a year.
6. Ask for the basis in writing
Request the effective date and contractual basis for each change, which charges are mandatory, whether the same service is available at a lower current rate, and the account's renewal and cancellation terms. Do not call a fee illegal or fraudulent based on the invoice pattern alone.
Large swings do happen: one small-business owner publicly described a trash contract moving from $160 to $450 per month before a cancellation discussion produced a much lower offer. That is one reported case, not a market-wide benchmark. Read the original account.
